Save, restore and publish

Every edit in Xodia, yours or your AI's, waits as a draft until you save it. Save turns the draft into a git commit on a branch, each save is a restore point, and Publish makes your changes live through your host.

On this page

Drafts and unsaved changesLink to this section

When something changes, the top bar shows how many files have unsaved changes, such as 3 unsaved. With nothing to save it shows Saved. Choose the count to review the changes.

Unsaved work is backed up to a private copy as you go, never to your branch, so a preview that goes to sleep loses nothing. If that backup ever fails, the top bar says Unsaved changes aren't backed up: save soon so the changes are kept.

Your edits and your AI's edits land in the same draft, so you review them together before anything is saved.

Save your changesLink to this section

  1. Open Save changes

Choose Save in the top bar, or press ⌘ S on a Mac or Ctrl S on Windows.

  2. Say what changed

Xodia suggests a message from your latest edits. Keep it or write your own under What changed. The dialog lists the files that changed.

  3. Choose where it goes

Under Save to, choose This branch, A new branch or Another branch, then choose Save.

Saving to a new branch or another branch comes with Starter, Pro and Agency. Starter and up A new branch's name uses lowercase letters, numbers and dashes, like preview or new-homepage.

Warning:

On your live branch, the branch your host publishes, Save suggests a new branch first. If you save to the live branch itself, Xodia warns you: saving there publishes the changes to your site.

Discard changesLink to this section

In Save changes, choose Discard, then Discard all changes, to go back to the last save. Leaving a branch with unsaved changes asks you to save or discard them first.

Go back to an earlier versionLink to this section

Every save is a restore point. To go back to one:

  1. Open Restore points

Open the project's Settings and choose Restore points. It lists every saved version of this branch, newest first, with its message and when it was saved.

  2. Restore

Choose Restore on a version, then Restore again to confirm. The preview shows that version, and the version before it stays in the list, so you can always switch back.

Restore points are available while the preview is running. Your AI can list and restore them too, when you ask it to.

Settings, Restore points: three saved versions of the main branch, newest first, the current one marked and the others each with Restore.

Branches and pull requestsLink to this section

On Starter, Pro and Agency, the branch menu in the top bar lists your branches and lets you create a new branch, open a pull request into the live branch, merge a branch to make it live, and delete a branch. Starter and up

On Free, you work on the project's default branch. Other branches, such as ones synced from GitHub, are view only: you can open and preview them, but not edit, save or restore there.

The branch menu in Xodia on the branch spring-hours: the branches on GitHub with main as the live site, then New branch, Open pull request into main, Merge into main (make live) and Delete branch.

PublishLink to this section

Your site goes live from its live branch on GitHub, and your host builds and deploys it. Publish puts your changes there.

  1. Choose Publish

Choose Publish in the top bar. The dialog says which branch and repository your site goes live from, and what publishing will do.

  2. Check before you publish

Under Before you publish, Xodia lists any issues on this page from the Audits panel. Choose Check the build to run a production build first; if it fails, ask your AI to fix it before you publish.

  3. Publish to live site

Choose Publish to live site. Xodia saves any unsaved changes, merges your branch into the live branch, and your host deploys it. The site is live when your host's build finishes.

After publishing, the top bar shows what your host reports for the branch: building, ready or failed. Connect your host to see the live address, every deploy and build logs in Xodia: see Connect your host.

Note:

A project started in Xodia keeps its code in Xodia's storage, so Publish first asks you to connect it to a GitHub repository. See Move a project to GitHub.

Who can publishLink to this section

By default every member of the workspace can publish to live. With team roles, the workspace chooses whether all members, admins and owners, or owners only can publish. Pro and up

Your AI can't publish. Its changes wait as a draft, it saves a restore point only when you ask, and it can't save to the live branch of a site imported from GitHub.
