Start or import a project

A project is one website in Xodia. Start it fresh from a starter, or import a site you already have from GitHub. Either way, New project takes two steps.

On this page

Xodia's New project dialog asking how you want to start: Start fresh from a starter, or Import from GitHub to open a site you already have, with Start fresh outlined, and the optional Connect your AI line.

Start fresh from a starterLink to this section

  1. Open New project

On the Projects page, choose New project. Under How do you want to start?, choose Start fresh.

  2. Pick a starter

Each starter is a framework with Tailwind, ready to edit visually. Choose the one that suits your site.

  3. Name it and create it

Type a project name and choose Create project. Xodia sets up the code and opens the editor while the preview starts.

StarterGood for
React + ViteSimple sites and landing pages
Next.jsSites that may grow into apps
AstroContent and marketing sites, blogs
React RouterMulti-page React sites with routes in files
HTML + VitePlain multi-page sites, no framework

A project started fresh keeps its code in Xodia's own storage. To publish it with a host, connect it to a GitHub repository later: see Move a project to GitHub. The starters are also shown on the templates page.

Xodia's New project dialog on Pick a starter: React + Vite, Next.js (chosen), Astro, React Router and HTML + Vite, each with what it suits and its tags, then the project name and Create project.

Import a site from GitHubLink to this section

  1. Choose Import from GitHub

In New project, choose Import from GitHub.

  2. Connect GitHub, the first time

Choose Connect GitHub and install the Xodia GitHub App on your account or organization, for all repositories or only the ones you pick. You can change that any time on GitHub. See GitHub.

  3. Import the repository

Pick the GitHub account, search for the repository and choose Import. Xodia installs your packages in a private preview and opens the editor.

A repository you've already imported shows Imported, with Open to go to its project. If a repository isn't listed, choose Missing a repository? Grant access on GitHub, add it there, and it appears in the list.

The New project dialog on Import from GitHub: the GitHub account and search, then the repositories the GitHub App may open, each with Import, one already imported with Open.

Connect your AI on the wayLink to this section

Until an AI is connected to the workspace, New project shows Connect your AI to build with it. Choose Connect to open the setup guide right there, or Skip to hide the line. Connecting is optional, and you can do it any time later: see Ways to connect your AI.

Your plan's project limitLink to this section

Each plan includes a number of projects, and an imported repository counts as one. At the limit, New project says you have reached your plan's project limit; upgrade, or delete a project, to add another.

Note:

If a workspace has more projects than its plan includes, for example after moving to a smaller plan, its most recently opened projects stay open and the rest are locked. Nothing is deleted: upgrade, or delete another project, to open a locked one again.

Rename, duplicate and organizeLink to this section

Each project on the Projects page has a menu with Open, Open in new tab, Settings, Rename, Duplicate, Move to folder, Refresh thumbnail, Copy link and Delete. Choose New folder to group projects; new projects go into the folder you have open.

Duplicate a projectLink to this section

Duplicate makes a copy in the same folder, named like the project with copy after it (My site copy). The copy holds the saved code and history of the project's default branch, as its main branch.

It doesn't copy unsaved changes, other branches, the GitHub link, host and analytics connections, or the preview's environment variables, since those can hold secrets. A copy counts as a project, so at your plan's limit Duplicate takes you to the plans instead.
