Xodia hosting and custom domains

Xodia hosting puts your site on the web from the Publish menu. Every site can go live on its own xodia.site address with HTTPS, and on a paid plan it can have a custom domain, with its xodia.site address as a Preview for testing updates first.

On this page

The Publish menu in Xodia: the live site on rise-bakery.xodia.site with Copy and Open, published 5 minutes ago, Update live site and more actions (Versions, Take offline), then Push to Git and Deploy.

Hosting on Xodia is optional: you can still deploy to your own host with Deploy. See Connect your host.

Go liveLink to this section

  1. Open the Publish menu

Choose Publish in the top bar. Before a site is live, the menu starts with Go live and the address the site will have.

  2. Choose Go live

Xodia builds the site from the branch you have open and puts it on its address, such as rise-bakery.xodia.site. Building usually takes under a minute. If the build fails, the menu shows why, with a button to ask your AI to fix it.

The live site is open to everyone and to search engines. Each page is built ahead as HTML with its own title and description, addresses that don't exist answer with your site's not found page, and a sitemap lists your pages. Free can have one live site, with a small Made with Xodia badge; on paid plans every project can be live, with no badge.

The Publish menu in Xodia before the site is live: Go live, which puts the site on its public address, rise-bakery.xodia.site, then Push to Git and Deploy.

Update, roll back and take offlineLink to this section

Once the site is live, the Publish menu shows its address with Copy and Open, and when it was last published. Your live site only changes when you update it.

  • Update live site builds the site again with your latest changes and puts it live.
  • Versions, in the more menu beside it, lists the versions kept, newest first, with the live one marked. Make live puts another one back at once, with no new build. Versions kept: 3 on Free and 10 on Starter, Pro and Agency.
  • Take offline, in the same menu, stops the address. Your versions are kept, so you can go live again or put any of them back.

Project settings, Publishing shows the site on Xodia hosting with its addresses and when it went live.

Connect a custom domainLink to this section

A custom domain needs a paid plan and the hosting add-on for the site. Starter and up The site must be live on its xodia.site address first.

  1. Choose the hosting add-on

Open Settings in the rail and choose Domains. In Hosting add-on, choose Site or Busy. Only workspace owners and admins can change it. See Plans and billing.

  2. Add your domain

In Custom domains, type your domain, such as www.yoursite.com, and choose Add. Leave Also add yoursite.com ticked to connect the bare domain too: the two count as one domain, and the one that isn't primary sends visitors to the other.

  3. Add the DNS records where you manage the domain

Xodia shows one or two records to add at your DNS provider, each with Copy. The first is a CNAME that points your domain at your Xodia site. Names are shown without your domain, as most providers expect.

  4. Wait for Live

DNS changes can take from a few minutes to a few hours to show up. Xodia keeps checking while the page is open and every 15 minutes after, and sets up HTTPS on its own. Choose Check now to look again straight away.

Xodia's Project settings on Domains: the Site address card with rise-bakery.xodia.site; the Hosting add-on with Site chosen and Busy beside it, each with its visits and price; Custom domains with www.risebakery.com Pending, its CNAME record named www with the value sites.xodia.site, and Check now.

Note:

Most DNS providers don't allow a CNAME on the bare domain (without www). If yours offers CNAME flattening, ALIAS or ANAME, use it for that record. If not, connect the www address and turn on your provider's forward from the bare domain to www. Xodia never changes your DNS.

What each status meansLink to this section

StatusWhat it means
PendingWaiting for your DNS records. Add them at your DNS provider.
CheckingXodia can see your domain and is setting up its HTTPS certificate, which usually takes a few minutes.
LiveThe domain serves your site with HTTPS.
Needs attentionXodia couldn't connect the domain. Check the records, then choose Check now.
MovedThe domain no longer points to your site. Add the record again at your DNS provider.
PausedThe site has no hosting add-on, so the domain shows a short paused page. Choose the add-on again to bring it back.

With two domains, choose Make primary on the one visitors should end up on. Remove a domain with its bin button; you can then delete its DNS records at your provider.

The Preview and choosing where updates goLink to this section

Once a custom domain is live, the site's xodia.site address becomes its Preview. The Preview is hidden from search engines, so only people you send it to will find it.

The Publish menu then lists both addresses, each with a tick box and when it was last published. Tick where an update goes, and the button says what it will do: Update both, Update domain or Update preview. Xodia remembers what you ticked.

  1. Update the Preview

Untick your domain and choose Update preview. Your domain keeps the version it has.

  2. Check it

Open the Preview, or send it to a client or your team.

  3. Update your domain

When it looks right, tick your domain and choose Update domain or Update both.

The Publish menu in Xodia with a custom domain: www.risebakery.com and the Preview, rise-bakery.xodia.site, each ticked with when it was published, the Password on Preview switch and Update both, then Push to Git and Deploy.

Put a password on the PreviewLink to this section

On Starter, Pro and Agency, turn on Password on Preview under the two addresses, choose a password and Save. Starter and up Visitors to the Preview then type the password first; your domain stays open to everyone. Choose Change to set a new one, or turn the switch off to remove it.

Change your site addressLink to this section

Every plan can change the name before .xodia.site. Open Settings, Domains, and type a new name in Site address: lowercase letters, numbers and single hyphens. Xodia checks it against every workspace as you type and says when it is available. Choose Save.

The old address sends visitors to the new one for 30 days, then anyone can take it. You can change the address up to 5 times a day, and a few names are reserved.

Visits and limitsLink to this section

Sites on their xodia.site address share the workspace's visits each month: Free about 1,000, Starter about 2,500, Pro about 5,000, Agency about 10,000. A site with the hosting add-on has its own visits instead: Site about 15,000 visits a month, Busy about 75,000 visits a month. Project settings, Usage shows what a site has used this month.

  • The workspace's owners get an email at 80% and at 100% of the visits.
  • Sites on xodia.site addresses past the shared visits show a short resting page until next month. Move to a bigger plan, or give a busy site the hosting add-on, to bring it back sooner.
  • A site with the add-on keeps serving up to 125% of its visits, and then for a 7-day grace. After that it rests until next month or until you move it to a bigger tier.
  • Nothing extra is charged, nothing is deleted, and editing keeps working the whole time.

Plans and billingLink to this section

Free goes live on xodia.site only. On a paid plan, the hosting add-on is billed per site with your plan each month:

  • Starter: Site $6 a month for the first site, then $5 for each more; Busy $15 a month a site.
  • Pro: Site $6 a month for the first site, then $5 for each more; Busy $15 a month a site.
  • Agency: Site $4.50 a month a site; Busy $13 a month a site.

Busier sites can ask us for a quote.

Adding the add-on, or moving to a bigger tier, charges the rest of the current month straight away. Then it renews with your plan.

Remove the add-onLink to this section

In Settings, Domains, choose Remove add-on. Billing for it stops at once, with no credit for the rest of the month, and the domain keeps working until the end of the month you paid for. After that the domain shows a paused page; choose the add-on again to bring it back. If your workspace moves to Free or a payment still fails after 7 days, custom domains pause the same way. Nothing is deleted.

Forms on hosted sitesLink to this section

Xodia Forms works on your xodia.site address, your Preview and your custom domain, as it does on any other host.
